Super Awesome Gluten Free Prawn Dill Chilli and Ginger Oko-om-nom-iyaki

gluten free okonomiyaki with prawn dill ginger and chilliOk, so this probably wins the post with the longest name. I’m ok with that because I am super excited to share with you this recipe. I have been trying to get the consistency of this pancake right for weeks!!!

Turns out the trick is a little more water and making everything smaller!! Originally I only had 1/2 cup of water and unchopped prawns and everything kept falling apart. Although I enjoyed the hot mess it produced, it really wasn’t blog-able. Fear not, perseverance got me a result I am now happy with.

Okonomiyaki is one of my favourite Japanese dishes – okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) literally means “grilled as you like it”. So I took liberty here and did just that. All of my favourite om noms are in here – you can either use my recipe as is or use the plain batter and make your own creations.

Rice flour is naturally gluten free so there will be no sore tummies after this meal. Additionally rice flour is easy to digest, full of fibre and protein, so if you need something a bit more substantial for dinner this is a great option for you.

Eat for: dinner, lunch
Cuisine: dairy free, refined sugar free, gluten free, fructose free
Serves: 2
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cup cold water
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, finely diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 1 chilli, finely diced
  • 1 bunch dill, finely chopped
  • Himalayan Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1-2 cups red cabbage, finely shredded/diced
  • 250g prawns, roughly diced
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Optional extras: Extra chilli
  • Kewpie mayo
  • Avocado
  • Lemon
  • Kimchi
  • Extra dill
  • Baby spinach
  1. In a large bowl whisk flour, eggs and water until you have a smooth batter.
  2. Add in dill, chilli, ginger, garlic, salt and pepper and mix.
  3. Add prawns and cabbage and mix well – everything should be covered.
  4. Heat a small cast iron pan with half of the oil.
  5. When hot, put in half of the mixture and spread until you have one even layer. Make sure all the bits are well covered with mixture.
  6. Give it a minute or two to cook. Use your spatular to tidy the slides and to start loosening it up – it should feel like the whole thing could slide off.
  7. Grab a plate thats roughly the size of the pan and place on top.
  8. With one hand on the plate and one on the pan, carefully flip the pan upside down so the pancake is on the plate.*
  9. Slide the pancakes uncooked side back onto the pan and cook another 2-3 minutes.
  10. Use the spatular to loosen things up again.
  11. Once cooked, use the plate (you might want to wipe it/clean it first) to remove it off the pan and transfer to a serving plate.
  12. Repeat with other pancake.
  13. Top with all your favourite okonomiyaki toppings.
*If you can flip without the plate then good on you! I find rice flour a little more tricky than white flour, hence the plate!
