Want to go to a health and wellness retreat in an exotic location that feels a lot like home? Is getting away from the big crowds and going surfing one of your aims in Bali? Well then, Komune is for you. Komune is a mid-range luxe-hip resort offering big pools, onsite yoga, access to raw treats and a big focus on catching the perfect wave.

To begin with, all of the villas are these super cute private box like structures which remind me a bit of the kiwi batch. Apparently the idea for Komune was built around the concept of a luxury beach camp – so full service grounds away from the built up tourist areas but with access to one of Bali’s best surf beaches and a huge focus on community. The Simple and paired back styling meets with small touches of Balinese culture. For example all of the interiors are styled with modern furniture and textile contrasting against all the paths and exteriors which are draped in lush local plants such as palms, hibiscus, and frangipani. You get the rustic feeling of a beach club with the benefit and comforts of modern design.

Onsite there are a lot of excellent communal amenities that cater for both families and the younger hipper crowd. At the beach you have a full service restaurant that serves you all day where the good quality food and excellent coffee can be enjoyed either on their deck couches, bar stools or traditional tables. Enjoy everything from the classic western bacon and eggs to authentic Bali dishes such as Nasi Goreng.

Next to the main restaurant is the public kid friendly pool which also overlooks the ocean. Think abundance of deck chairs, massive pool floation devices and all round fun. Other cool things to note here is the massive nightly outdoor cinema, as well as the cool surfing events they host.

If being a lil more chill is more your thing, Komune also has a less hectic private pool. Tucked away up a short pebbled path is where all of the super-foodie health and wellness action takes place. First of all they have a restaurant dedicated to clean eating – think raw salads, superfood smoothies and healthy treats. Behind this restaurant is the yoga studio where you can participate in their twice daily yoga schedule. If you want something more gym based, their fully kitted gym is right next door and also holds classes such as group runs, ab workouts and spin classes.

If you’re too impatient and hot to wait at the restaurant to eat, they will happily serve you your detox juice in the luxury cabanas poolside. While you wait you can relax in their half submerged water loungers or do laps in their ‘no-kids-allowed-for-guests-only-pool’. I have to say – we spent a lot of time here!

If you want to get out and about and enjoy Bali, the service desk has a full range of activities and adventure for you to peruse. Anything from white water rafting and quad biking through jungles to visiting monkey forest or just excellent advise on local places to eat.

Other cute things to note is that have a cool little vegie patch, an onsite beauty clinic which offers massages and facials as well as a surf store for if you need some new One Teaspoon ripped denim shorts.

So all around a great range of activities for your busy on the go lifestyle. If you want to get the most out of your holiday in Bali – definitely consider staying here.

Getting there:
Komune is located about 45 minutes away from Bali’s international airport and the same distance again from tourist favourites Seminyak and Kuta. Taxis or shuttle services can easily be arranged with the front desk.

Where next?
After Komune on our way to Vila Kubu we stopped at the ultra luxurious Sukhavati a day of much needed pampering.
